About Storytelling Connects®
We have developed a group storytelling activity for people who want to stay mentally flexible. Based on insights from psycholinguistics and creative engagement approaches for people with dementia, the activity was originally created for people experiencing issues with their memory. In response to increasing demand, we have adapted the activity for anyone who would like a fun and sociable brain workout in a storytelling card game. Our goal is to provide opportunities for enjoyable and creative social interaction that builds to a group inspired story. The game works well with older people who may feel socially isolated, with children and grandparents and also with young people who enjoy being creative and using thier imaginations. This website gives access to resources for people to run the activity as a facilitated workshop, or as a card game with built-in storytelling prompts.
An Evidence Based Game.
The card game was developed and tested with players to build an evidence base. Trials involved colleagues at the University of Sussex and University of Northampton, people with mild–moderate dementia and Huntington’s disease, children and families, and were run in community, service, and clinical settings. Feedback ensured the game is fun, accessible, and boosts wellbeing and social interaction.
